Model United Nations

Model United Nations - also know as Model UN or MUN - is a popular extra curricular activity in which students role play delegates to the United Nations, simulate UN committees, and learn about diplomacy, international relations, current world issues and the UN itself.

At an MUN conference, each student works as the representative of a country, organisation, or person, and must solve a problem with other delegates from around the world. MUN teaches participants skills like research, public speaking, debating, writing, critical thinking, teamwork and leadership.

Model United Nations was a resounding success once again this year in DGS, a testament to the leadership, organisation and guidance provided to us by both Ms. Jones and Ms. Hodgins.

Our journey as delegates this year began bright and early on the morning of January 23rd, 2024 at Drogheda Train Station.  We were headed for Cork, on a 3 night trip for our first Model United Nations conference of the year. We countless hours of preparation in advance, we were more than ready to take on the week of lobbying, debating and networking.  The event was hosted by Davis College in the magnificent Cork City Hall, making the experience all the more memorable.  During the conference we represented member states of the United Nations interacting as they would in a real United Nations conference.  We discussed real-world problems as well as some fictitious and humorous topics.  Throughout the conference we also forged friendships, improved upon our public speaking skills and gained a valuable insight into the world of diplomacy. Our evenings were filled with social events, where we had a chance to unwind and socialise with students from other schools.  Following on from this trip, our Model United Nations journey continued in Dublin where we attended a second conference, this time hosted in Wesley College.  It was once again a fantastic chance to improve upon the aforementioned skills and followed a similar format to the previous conference.

We would like to thank everyone involved in MUN this year; the host schools for welcoming our delegations; student volunteers, teaching staff; conference organisers; and above all the PTA.  None of these experiences would have been possible without their continued and unwavering support.

Overall, Model United Nations was a rewarding and memorable experience for all and I am proud to say that as delegates we fully immersed ourselves in the experience and embodied the school's motto "Floreat" (Flourish)
