Basketball

Basketball was first invented by Springfield College instructor and graduate student James Naismith in 1891. Naismith was tasked by the college's superintendent of physical education with coming up with a new type of indoor physical activity to help kids stay active during the New England Winter while also avoiding injury, and the result was basketball.  Naismith took inspiration from a variety of sports, including rugby and soccer, when creating this new sport.  The first basketball game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets nailed to the gymnasium balcony, hence it's name. News of this new game spread quickly and basketball became an officially recognised sport in 1905.

Most people think that basketball is a relatively new sport in Ireland that was introduced to us as another "American sport".

The truth is actually completely opposite. Basketball is not a new import to his country, but has actually been played here since early 1920's when Sergeant Major Doogan first introduced the sport into the army.

U16 Boys Reflection, Eoin 3rd Year

My experience with the U16 team this year has been amazing.  We have achieved so much considering where we started off.  There were very little expectatios on us to perform, as through the first and second year we hadn't won a single match.  However, through great dedication and teamwork we managed to reach the All-Irelands. Playing this year was a great deal of fun for al and will hopefully continue next year.
